Okaiawa will play in the women’s premier club competition, for the first time, boosting the competition to four teams.
The South Taranaki based club will join existing teams Coastal, Southern and Clifton in the competition.
Taranaki Rugby Women’s Development Manager, Braydon Peterson, said the community has rallied behind forming a team, which strengthens the competition.
“We are putting in a lot of resource into women’s rugby with the help from our volunteers”, he said.
Defending champions Coastal along with Clifton and Southern have been training hard since the start of the year to build on last year’s performances.
Peterson said there are genuine opportunity for women’s players to represent their club and move into the high performance system.
“With the Port Taranaki Whio up and running, players can now strive to represent their province, like last year. We are happy with how the women’s competition went last year and looking to grow it as times goes on”.
Peterson said a selection of women’s games will play before the premier men’s matches on Saturday afternoons to build hype around the competition.
“Having all club teams at home would boost, not only the women’s game, but club rugby in general”, he said.
The first round of the competition will start on Friday March 29 and Saturday March 30 at Joll Park and Hicks Park.
The two top teams will play in a straight final scheduled for early June after nine rounds.
